Aviation Safety & LSA Seminars: a Wrap-Up Report
We had an excellent time at the Aviation Safety & LSA Seminars yesterday, on Sunday, June 1. Eighty-two pilots signed the guest book and there were only a few of the 96 chairs vacant during the seminars.
John Townsley did a great job of making the subject of Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFR) understandable and explaining what pilots have to do to protect themselves from busting a TFR. The TFR notification system is not as good as I had assumed it to be and the Internet resources are not a perfect solution.
Spence Campbell's presentation on how to fly to and around the Puget Sound was practical and very useful. Many pilots commented after the presentation that they had learned some tips that they are going to use on their next trip "over the mountains".
It was great to have two seminars in a short period of time that left us with practical tips and information that we can use immediately. Thank you Spence and John!
Lots of pilots got to try on a Light Sport Aircraft (LSA) for size; thanks to Jabiru Northwest and Cub Crafters for displaying new LSA aircraft. There were also a number of vintage, certificated aircraft that meet the definition of LSA and pilots were able to see a wide variety of aircraft and price options in a short time. Thank you to all of the pilots who put their aircraft on display!
The Aviation Club from Walla Walla University had thirteen contestants for the Spot Landing Contest. This is a fun event and we saw contestant ages from teens to eighty, and aircraft from ultralights to a C-180 with STOL kit and tundra tires, and not to forget the standard Cessnas and Cherokees. The afternoon winds were averaging 8-knots and gusting to 16-knots, so it was challenging for participants to be consistent with the turbulence over the trees on approach. Still, some pilots showed superior skill with consistent control of their aircraft and turned in good scores.
Spot Landing Contest Winners:
1st Place: Larry Goodhew
2nd Place: Greg Williams
3rd Place: John Ball
